The idea of this weight loss exercise program is to develop a consistent approach to weight loss as well as a healthy endurance when exercising. The program's objective is to get rid of the excesses in your body, the excess fat. Not the healthy and lean muscle tissues and body fluids.

By the second day, it is good to focus on an upper body workout. This maintains your strength to be able to go through the whole program for the week. On the third day, a brisk walk or jog for ten minutes is in order. For beginners, a lower body workout should be done in the evening.

In the fourth day, a good rest is in order, as well as a good stretch. This lay time should be used wisely though to sort out any negatives in your mind set. The fifth day starts with a good ten minute walk. Exercise the lower body in four sessions of workouts, follow this up with another ten minute walk, and another four sessions of lower body workout.

The sixth day should be spent on a low impact exercise such as swimming. To avoid boredom, do not be afraid to try something new. The results showed that the dieters had a decrease in body expenditure, even when accounting for the loss in body mass.

Perhaps an example will make this clearer. Let's say a woman requires 2,000 calories a day to maintain her weight. She goes on a diet and loses 10% of her weight. It would follow that she should be able to maintain her new weight by eating 1,800 calories a day (10% less than 2,000 calories); but, this is not the case. She has to eat in the range of 1,650 calories or else she will regain the weight she lost. This is why so many people keep gaining and losing the same 15 pounds.

Thus, the human body is not only programmed to avoid weight loss, but to return to its previous weight after an episode of weight loss. Why is this? Again, let's go back to our primordial ancestors wandering the plains in search of food. If the spear chuckers went into a slump, there were no 7-11s around to pick up a bag of Doritos. To prevent the tribe from starving, evolution developed a mechanism that allowed the human body to utilize the little food available with greater efficiency - starvation metabolism.

Many weight loss programs correctly emphasize the importance of exercise, but again, discipline is crucial too. More exercise simply increases one's appetite, just like driving a car a further distance requires more gas. This is why lumberjacks eat more than accountants. However, one strategy that helps everyone in the weight-loss struggle is to create a deficit between the calories we eat and the calories we burn – fewer calories "in," more calories "out." This simple formula will give us the best chance for success with weight loss.

Your diet
Very few aspects of your life are as emotionally charged as securing your right to choose for yourself. From early childhood until today, one of the most important choices you make concerns your diet. You must have choices and they must be your own. Recognize that restricting yourself from available choices goes against your very nature. A restrictive diet is doomed to failure. Select a diet that is uncomplicated and appealing to you and you will have a greater chance for success.

The first challenge we face in diet selection is committing to the discipline of thinking ahead instead of eating impulsively. So, start with something small and attainable:

  • Many health experts recommend fresh fruits and vegetables daily

Calories in – calories OUT!
We must burn more calories than we consume in order for weight loss to occur.

Exercise is the key to permanent, lifetime weight control. There is no way around it. However, exercise does not have to be a punishment; it can really be pleasurable. The key is finding something you enjoy doing. I recommend that you start with three forms of activity; this prevents exercise boredom. Add more activities every month. Get in the habit of participating in at least 30 minutes of activity every day.

There are basically two types of exercise that you need every week:

  1. Aerobic exercise is defined as any activity that increases your need for oxygen. Aerobics make you breathe harder. You need at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise most days of the week. Some examples include walking, swimming and an exercise bike. If you're new to exercise, start out slowly and get your doctor's OK. As the weather gets cooler, look for indoor alternatives like a brisk walk at your local mall.

    Aerobic exercise can balance hormones, relieve anxiety and depression, and mobilize your energy for the great works of your life. Aerobic exercise speeds up your metabolism.

    But where does metabolism originate? It comes from your lean body mass – your muscles! That is the domain of resistance training.

     
  2. Progressive resistance training is defined as any exercise where the load to the muscle is increased by some mechanical means – weights, bands, springs and many other methods. The key is to progressively increase the weight or resistance over time. This results in more lean body mass and less fat mass. If you increase your muscle strength, you increase the "engines" that produce muscle energy. Nothing builds metabolism (muscle energy) as well as progressive resistance training. 2 Are We Like Animals

While we can't compare ourselves with animals we can begin to understand eating habits and the reason why humans become over weight. Mind you sometimes I thought I had animals working out in my health clubs. LOL

Consider how many animals you will see that are over weight. In the wild you wouldn't find any and it is not because of a lack of food - although that certainly will cause a wild animal to be under weight.

No; even where there is abundance of food animals in the wild don't get obese like humans do and it is not because of their metabolism or digestive systems. It is because they are eating the correct foods that nature designed their systems to eat to ensure that they are getting the correct nutrition to maintain good health and obesity certainly isn't a good healthy state to be in.

I doubt you will find any animals that are obese other than those that we keep as pets and that is because humans not only eat the wrong foods themselves but they also feed their pets the wrong foods.

We feed our pet's processed pet food that has all sorts of colors, additives and other rubbish that they were never designed to have. And the result of feeding them a poor diet is the high and ever increasing incidence of diabetes in domestic animals.

On the flip side of the coin, we make ourselves sick with poor food choices and are reducing the chances of living long and healthy lives. Then buy the best and most nutrious food for ourr pets.

Just like the food we buy for ourselves, the food we buy for our pets is often determined by the quality of the marketing campaigns that promote those foods.

Weight Loss - Fat Loss

Do you Know the difference between weight loss and fat loss? because they do not mean the same thing. You must know the difference if you want to lose weight or lose fat effectively and healthily.

When you step onto your bathroom scale every morning, what you will be reading from the scale is weight loss and not fat loss. Bath room scales are never accurate in determining fat loss.

Why? Because it measures your overall weight and not your body fat. If you weigh yourself in the morning before breakfast after your bowel movement, you will probably get your lowest reading of the day because your body is dehydrated through hours of non fluid replenishment when you were sleeping and after emptying your bowels, more water and wastes are flushed away so much so that you are you are lighter. After a night of sleep and not eating anything, your carbohydrate store is running low and therefore you are even lighter without the stored carbohydrate known as glycogen. What happened then? You just lost weight not lost fat! Your body fat is still there while the weight of other substances such as glycogen, wastes, water etc are depleted.

Now go weigh yourself again after dinner when you are fully replenished through meals and consumption of water and it may surprised you that you may probably weigh 2kg or more heavier and that is at least 4.4 pounds! You just gained weight and may even gained fat! Now you can see that it is such a misnomer when people think weight loss and fat loss are the same thing.

Why must you know the difference? Because for most of us, especially those who are on the fat side want to lose fat and not necessarily want to lose weight. Getting the drift?

Now for the more important part. Mere weight loss may cause you to lose muscle and in turn, make you gain body fat later. Yes, it is ironical. That is because the more muscle mass you have, the more you burn fat efficiently because muscle is an active tissue and it requires calories to function. Body fat just sit there doing nothing and thus do not burn calories on its own. So the less muscle mass you have, the less calories your body will burn. The fewer calories your body burn, the more calories ended up being stored as body fat! Therefore it is important to lose fat but not merely lose weight which may include the loss of muscle tissues.

How is it that a person may lose muscle on a weight loss program? Well for starters, we commonly hear about people going on this diet and that diet. Most diets demand a severe restriction of food or calorie intake. Your body will then signal to your mind that you are in a starvation mode and the body is designed to store fat for the impending famine and will use up your muscle for energy in your daily activities.

Some diets advocate a severe cut in carbohydrate. Carbohydrate is your body's first source of energy. When your body is depleted of carbohydrate, it turns to your protein (muscles) and body fat indiscriminately for energy. Now to make matters worse, because of the restricted carbohydrate consumed, there will be fewer carbohydrate calories to be used as energy calories and that again will signal the onset of starvation mode again. The vicious cycle of your body cannibalising its own muscle is set in motion again. The same applies to people on slimming pills or salon fat loss programs.

So some people say ok, so I will just do plenty of cardio exercises to lose weight. Another grave mistake. Have you ever wondered why marathon runners, those who run many kilometres often and are doing cardio exercises almost everyday are so skinny with no muscle tone? Because your body is a wonderful machine. It is designed to adapt. When you run or skip or swim long enough, it will say, look, I better get lighter so that I can take the stress better and improve the endurance. Guess what? Your muscles are heavier than fats and what will your body shed more when it wants to get lighter? Muscle or fat? Your body will shed both but more muscles than fats.

Anyway, why would you want to lose weight only to become a smaller you with the same body shape without any muscle tone? Why would you want to be on a weight loss program that eats your muscles and lower your fat burning rate so much so that when you are off the program, the fats come piling back on again?

Therefore, while you are on a weight loss program, you must also be on a build muscle program. That will mean a combination of correct dietary habit, cardio exercises and weight training exercises to maintain muscle preservation and a fat loss result.

From now on tell people you are on a fat loss program and not a weight loss program. That you are on a correct eating habit instead of just simply dieting.

With the distinction clearly in mind, you will then know how to lose fat effectively, preserve and grow your muscles and at the same time losing weight on your bathroom scale. That would be an ideal way to achieve your weight loss objective because you will lose body fat instead of muscle and mere body wastes.

How much exercise do you need to do for weight loss purposes. We all know that exercise is good for you, 30 minutes a day being the average target, however this is not sufficient for weight loss purposes.

Moderate exercise for 20-30 minutes five days a week will keep you fit and healthy but if you are overweight you need to work out for twice this amount of time, according to a study study, led by John Jakicic at the Physical Activity and Weight Management Research Centre at the University of Pittsburgh

A group of 200 overweight women were studied over a period of two years and during that time the ones whose weight loss was 10% or more were found to be those that were spending around an hour a day exercising. Many lost 10% in the first six months only to put it back on when they got bored of exercising.

A 10% weight loss target for overweight people represents a tremendous boost for overall well-being, lowering blood pressure, improving heart health and reducing the risk of Type 2 diabetes.

The facts are that if you are using exercise for weight loss you must exercise for longer that the normal 30 minutes which is not sufficient to burn of the body fat. When you have reached your weight loss target you might be able to reduce your exercise time.

A scientific study in the UK has found the reason why fat people find it hard to lose weight, its all in the genes. The study was conducted at Imperial college.

Apparently there is a gene sequence linked to an expanding waist line, weight gain and a tendency to develop type 2 diabetes.The new gene sequence sits close to a gene called MC4R, which regulates energy levels in the body by influencing how much we eat and how much energy we expend or conserve. The researchers believe the sequence is involved in controlling the MC4R gene, which has also been implicated in rare forms of extreme childhood obesity.

The study shows that the sequence is a third more common in those with Indian Asian than in those with European ancestry. This could provide a possible genetic explanation for the particularly high levels of obesity and insulin resistance in Indian Asians, who make up 25 per cent of the world's population, but who are expected to account for 40 per cent of global heart disease by 2020.

Last year a British led team found that if people carry one copy of a variant in a gene called FTO, as does half of the general population, it will lead to a gain in weight of 2.6lb or put just over half an inch on their waists and raise their risk of being obese by one third.

If people have two copies of this variant in the FTO gene, which is the case in one in six of the population, then they will gain almost 7lb more than those who lack the variation and are at a 70 per cent higher risk of obesity.

The findings therefore provide a new target for treatment of obesity, namely by attacking the signals and genes in fat cells that control the formation of new such cells.

"Various groups are looking at compounds that might regulate the formation of fat cells but this work is at too early a stage to say when anti obesity drugs based on this understanding will be tested on patients, if at all."

Until a solution can be found it is important if you are finding it hard to lose weight that you work extra hard on weight loss programs to reduce health risks.
