Weight Loss

Are You desperate to lose weight?

Losing weight especially for the overweight person must be considered the safest and the healthiest way. Basically the right health program to lose weight is by Reducing the amount of Calories of the food you eat, Increasing the levels of Activity, and fixing your current eating habits or having Diet .

Make sure you understand how important is to have a healthy diet to Lose Weight, not the extreme and straight diet which caused starving and severely restrict calories or the types of food 'allowed' which lead you to be deficient in the nutrients and vitamins that your body needs.

Make your Diet Plan as Healthy Diet Program With these Diet Tips below :

1. Breakfast starts the day off right
After waking up, your body needs nutrients and calories immediately. Especially protein. Eat eggs ( Make 3-4 scrambled eggs ). This gets you the protein and fills you up. Eat Black Beans (It claimed as the best food for diet) as much as possible A single can of black beans has 25 grams of fiber and 25 grams of protein... with no sugar. Heat 1/2 of a can of black beans for 5 minutes and spread over your eggs.

2. Protein and fiber for lunch
The more calories ( healthy calories ) you get earlier in the day, the easier the rest of the day becomes for you. You'll have less cravings and less need for snacks to tide you over until the next meal. Eat Tilapia or salmon on a bed of lettuce. Other proteins you can use instead... 1 can of tuna, 1 can of black beans, 1 chicken breast, or 1 hamburger patty.

3. Dinner with a lean meat and some "superfood" vegetables
Use whatever lean meat you want for dinner, but I strongly recommend that you eat 8 ounces of broccoli or cauliflower... or a combo of both.

4. Choose your snacks wisely
Too many people use convenience foods for snacks. A lot of times you don't even have any control over this since you ate so badly in the morning and afternoon that you need the quick energy from the sugars in them. Regardless, try to eat as many apples and low calorie yogurts for your snacks.

5. Drink Water, Protein Shakes, Fruit Juices, and Tea The empty calories beverages are killing you slowly . The average person gets over 25% of his/her calories from liquids now.

Try this simple healthy Diet Plan , healthy diet to lose weight which won't cause you feel like you're suffering or depriving yourself.

Weight Loss

Are You desperate to lose weight?

There are many weight loss diets that are available to an individual who is desperate to lose weight. Some of these weight loss diets can be categorized in a number of ways. For example some of the diets concentrate on just eating certain types of nutrients. An example of this type of diet can be a high protein or low carbohydrate diet.

Other types of diets can include a diet that emphasizes the use of one particular food. An example of this type of diet could be a grapefruit diet. In addition, there are diets that count calories, count points, count portions, etc.

However, the best weight loss diet is one that allows for the successful loss of weight in a healthy manner. Therefore, the best weight loss diet is one that eats the proper food, loses weight over a period of time and incorporates an exercise program.

When it comes to determining the best weight loss diet for an individual to be involved with it is important to start a diet that provides the human body all the nutrients it requires. Therefore, the best weight loss diet is one that does not focus in on one single food item, but incorporates protein, carbohydrates, fats, etc.

Therefore, the diet is not about starving the body or going on a crash diet. The best diet is an action plan that utilizes a menu which helps the individual to either keep track of calories that is consumed or eating portions of specific foods.

One of the struggles for an individual who is desperate to lose weight is the feeling of being hungry. Therefore, if this is an issue, the individual who is considering what diet to be involved with may consider a vegetarian weight loss diet. This type of diet is not only beneficial in that the individual can eat vast amounts of vegetables, but this will also give them the feeling of being full.

In addition, it is important to know that the best weight loss diet is not sufficient unto itself. Therefore, in order to not only maximize the weight loss of an individual it is important to consider another component to help in this process.

That additional component is an exercise program with the diet plan. This strategy will not only help the individual to accelerate their weight loss, but help to tone up the muscles of the body that may have been neglected. In addition, it will increase the strength of the cardiovascular system.

Weight Loss

Are You desperate to lose weight?

Losing weight is tough when you don't know how. Most people fail at losing weight because they were taught wrong or they simply do not have the resources. There are simple steps to lose weight than will help you tremendously. Motivation helps you by keeping you in focus and not letting yourself down. Setting goals gives you something to strive for so you can be proud of what you achieved. And a high metabolism helps burn off the weight.

A high metabolism is one of the most important things when you want you are desperate to lose weight. What metabolism does is it simply burns your food instead of storing it as extra weight. The last thing that you want to happen is to keep on gaining weight. Metabolisms correct that. How do you attain a high metabolism? Simple all you need to do is instead of eating three big meals a day eat five or six smaller meals. This will make your metabolism skyrocket.

Goal setting is another important method if you are desperate to lose weight. Most people simply do not know how to set goals when they are desperate to lose weight. They only set one goal, which eventually brings them down mentally because of the overbearing task that they would like to accomplish. Instead of just making one goal, try making multiple smaller goals that lead to your desired weight. This helps you by making you feel like you accomplish a goal and keeps you moving on toward your next one.

I cannot express this enough of how important motivation is when you are desperate to lose weight. It is simply the number one thing you have to have when you want to lose weight. If you do not have motivation you have no desire to lose extra extra weight at all. Nothing keeps you going and there for you will ultimately fail your weight loss goal. What I would recommend to motivate yourself is to either look at yourself in the mirror or imagine what you want to look like or write down some goals on some cards and read them day in and day out.

You now have three simple rules to lose weight. If you apply these to your weight loss routine you are guaranteed to lose weight faster than you ever thought possible. Increase your metabolism high, make smaller goals for yourself and most importantly stay motivated.

Weigth Loss

Are You desperate to lose weight?

Starting a weight loss diet is one of the easiest things a person can do. Staying with it, well, that's another thing entirely. There are so many reasons that people just can't seem to stay with their weight loss attempts no matter how desperate they are to lose weight.

If you are like most people, you probably have a pretty full schedule nearly every day with what seems like more things to do than hours in the day to get them done. Between work, school and things at home that need to be done, it's no wonder that it can be so hard to find time to lose weight.

Most of the time you are probably eating haphazardly, eating whatever is fast, convenient and can be eaten on the go. Your average day never seems to give you the time to exercise. Well, if you are serious about losing that extra weight there are a few things you can do that will help make your quest a little easier. It will still take some effort on your part, but you can do it.

To start with, you need to have a plan. Weight loss is a long term goal, and while long term goals may be important, they often do not have a sense of urgency. It is too easy for less important things, but things that have to get done right now, to take over and put your long term goal on the back burner.

The way to remedy this is to break your long term goal down into a series of short term ones, then break these short term ones into things that find their way onto your daily "to do" list. Make a list of what you want to accomplish with your weight loss plan and be specific. Rather than saying "I would like to lose this extra weight", say "I want to lose 20 pounds in the next six months".

Now that you have a long term goal for yourself, you need a plan of action to make it a reality. This is where you now say "to do this, I want to lose 3-4 pounds each month". Now that you've set yourself up with a series of short term goals, you need to say to yourself "I will lose one pound every week until I have lost 3-4 pounds this month". Now keep in mind that it is not enough to simply have the goal. You need to remind yourself of it everyday, all day.

Put your goal of losing one pound each week on your refrigerator door, on your computer screen, your calendar or your day planner, and even on the dashboard of your car. This way your plan is always there with you everyday, all day to keep you reminded of just how important it is, where ever you go.

You probably won't be able to make all of the changes you want to all at once. To be realistic about it, select one or two things like snacking or fast food to eliminate, and focus on those things. Write down what you want to do different, and make it part of your 'things to do today" list. Each day as you do these things, mark it off as done for that day. By doing this, you can see that you really are achieving your goals and you will feel so good about yourself each day for making yourself stay committed to it.

If one day here and there you didn't accomplish your daily goal, do not feel defeated and do not get down about it. What you need to do here is sit down and assess the situation to figure out why it didn't happen that day. Perhaps you just need to plan your day a little better.

If you had planned to bring a low fat, healthy lunch with you but got rushed and did not have the time to make it, start making it the night before and keep it in the fridge, then all you have to do is grab it and go. Remember, you are only human and you will make mistakes, but the important thing is that you learn from your mistakes and move ahead rather than letting them defeat you.

Take a few minutes at the end of each day to reflect on everything that you did that day, and to plan out your next day. The little bit of time you take each day to plan will make a major difference in your weight loss success.

Weight Loss

Are You desperate to lose weight?

Now, I'm going to share why many people fail to lose weight and maintain that weight reduction. It's either one or two things, some lose weight very fast through some form of trend diet, but later regain it. Or some fail to lose weight at all. In fact, some men including me got fatter while making an attempt to lose weight.

Okay, before I give you the explanation so many are not successful at shedding pounds, I need to make something totally clear to you.

Most of your fat loss will be directly linked to your diet. Eating correctly is greater than any exercise program that you can ever institute to lose weight. Mix the two and you've a winner. But if you had to choose from the two…Diet will trump exercise each time, in order to lose weight.

Since I have gotten that off my chest, here's the #1 reason why many people can't lose weight.

Failure to prepare and organize meals

As I mentioned above, dieting is the most vital component when it comes to weight loss…. And selecting your meals wisely is vital to weight loss…. So it's logical to claim that not planning and organizing your meals is why the general public can't can not lose weight.

Here's what occurs when you do not prepare your meals. If you under prepare your meals, then you're going to eat foods for convenience. You see, when you do not plan your meals, once hunger kicks in, you can eat anything that's around you including foods which will make you fat. But If you prepare previously, you will be in control and lose weight.

Do not keep foods in the house that will make it difficult to lose weight.

Remember that in order to lose weight you must plan out your meals. Go ahead and sit down for five mins every day to plan out the meals and snacks that you will need for the next day. If you stick with the meal plan exactly, you'll lose weight fast.

Weight loss Surgery

Are You desperate to lose weight?
If you are, there is a good chance that you have heard of weight loss surgery before. Weight loss surgery is how many individuals lose weight. Although weight loss surgery has helped thousands of Americans lose weight, improve their appearance, and improve their health, weight loss surgery may not be for you.

When it comes to determining if weight loss surgery is right for you, there are a number of factors that you will need to take into consideration. One of those factors is your current weight. Most of the time, you will find that weight loss surgeons require their patients to be at least eighty pounds overweight. If you are not as overweight as recommend, you may not even be able to undergo a weight loss surgery. If that is the case, you should keep in mind that there are a number of different weight loss approaches that you can take.

Talking of different weight loss methods, have you tried any other approaches? Many individuals are able to successfully lose weight with healthy eating, exercise, and weight loss products, like diet pills. While there are some individuals who opt for weight loss surgery right away, there are others who only use it as a last resort. Although weight loss surgery, like gastric bypass surgery or lap-band surgery, is more than worth it, you may be able to lose your excess weight without having to spend a large amount of money doing so.

Another factor that you should take into consideration, when determining if weight loss surgery is right for you, is your health. If you are overweight, have you been noticing any other health problems or has your doctor outlined the importance of losing weight for your health? If this has happened, you may not have a choice when it comes to undergoing weight loss surgery. For some individuals, weight loss surgery is, literally, lifesaving.

As it was previously mentioned, two popular weight loss surgeries include gastric bypass surgery and lap-band surgery. While there additional weight loss surgeries that you can undergo, these two are the most popular ones. The surgery that you would like to undergo is also important when determining whether or not weight loss surgery is your best option. For instance, gastric bypass surgery requires the stapling of the stomach, whereas lap-band surgery involves an adjustable or removable band. When deciding which weight loss surgery you should undergo, your decision will need to be made in conjunction with a healthcare professional.

When examining weight loss surgeries, you will find that most surgeries reduce the stomach pouch size. For that reason, your ability to follow all instructions given to you is important. After undergoing a weight loss surgery, like lap-band surgery or gastric bypass surgery, your healthcare professional will likely request that you develop yourself an exercise plan, as well as eat healthy. It is important that you follow all advice given to you. With weight loss surgeries that involve the reduction of the stomach pouch, an over consumption of food can be harmful to your weight loss, as well as dangerous to your health.

The above mentioned factors are factors that may help you determine whether or not weight loss surgery is right for you. As a reminder, it is important to remember that weight loss surgery is not your only option, when looking to lose weight, but it is a method that you should explore

Weight Loss

Desperate To Lose Weight

A few studies indicate that caffeine may slightly enhance weight loss in people who exercise and maintain a low-fat diet. But there's no evidence that increased caffeine intake results in significant or permanent weight loss.

Marketers of fad diets and weight-loss supplements often exaggerate the benefits of caffeine, claiming that caffeine will significantly curb your appetite and help you drop pounds quickly. However, clinical studies on the relationship between caffeine and weight loss don't support these claims.

Here's what researchers have found:

  • Caffeine may act as an appetite suppressant. However, while studies have shown that some people eat less after consuming caffeine, this effect is brief – not long enough to lead to significant weight loss.
  • Caffeine may increase your body's ability to burn calories. Caffeine is thought to stimulate thermogenesis – one way your body generates heat and energy from digesting food. However, caffeine's role in thermogenesis probably isn't enough to result in significant weight loss.
  • Caffeine acts as a diuretic, which means it causes an increase in the amount of urine you excrete. This water loss may temporarily decrease your body weight.

It's important to keep in mind that caffeine is a stimulant that can increase your heart rate and blood pressure, interrupt your sleep, and cause nervousness and irritability. Also, many caffeinated beverages are high in calories, which can contribute to unwanted weight gain.

Weight Loss

Desperate To Lose Weight

Every person that begins a diet and exercise plan does so with the intention to become healthier and lose weight. How to lose weight quickly is a common question, which is why some people enlist the help of a personal trainer to guide them through the diet and exercise maze. Of course, diet and exercise is the healthiest way to lose weight, but it does take some time. As fat is replaced by muscle, calories are burned more efficiently and a leaner appearance is the result. Sometimes it's easy to get discouraged with this approach, but progress cannot be measured solely on what the scale reads. Muscle weighs more than fat, and many times weight stays the same or only decreases at small increments. Though it may not seem like much, weight loss is occurring at a steady rate.

Diet and exercise is great but in most cases, the weight doesn't just melt off like some people expect it to, which is why people want to know how to lose weight quickly. Depending on how much weight someone wants to lose, there are lots and lots of ways how to lose weight quickly. Low carbohydrate diets such as Atkins and the South Beach Diet are a good way to lose weight quickly, a lot if needed. Dieters can usually lose from five to ten pounds relatively quickly, but dieters should still be aware of their nutritional intake and not restrict themselves too much. Low carbohydrate diets emphasize eating greater amounts of protein, while restricting consumption of carbohydrates and refined sugars. The cayenne pepper diet attempts to use pepper to boost your metabolism. Once these foods are eliminated cravings will decrease, and the pounds will start to melt off as well.

For more ideas on how to lose weight quickly, dieters can visit the web to check out a multitude of sources with lots of good information on dieting, what plans works and which one's to stay away from. Both Atkins and the South Beach Diet can guide people who want to learn how to lose weight quickly, and keep it off. After losing weight it is easy to slip back into the clutches of bad habits. Now why would anyone want to do that after working so hard to get the weight off? In addition to learning how to lose weight quickly, dieters need to learn how to completely change their eating habits for good. Being healthy is much better than the alternative.

Weigth Loss

Using the Glycemic Index if you are desperate to lose weight

Finding the right diet can be quite the adventure these days. You've got a whole bunch of fad diets intermixed with legitimate diets and the task of sorting through them just isn't very fun. I know very well how frustrating it can be to devote yourself to a diet and end up without any positive results only to have to start with a new diet all over again. One of the many diets that I've come across during my selection, was one of the glycemic index diets, which after some examination seemed to be well grounded in science. What I found that not only was the Glycemic Index a great way to evaluate food and your dietary habits, but it was actually effective in helping me lose weight. If you'd like to learn more about glycemic index diets, then stay tuned for a brief overview.

The way that the glycemic index works is by separating foods into categories by giving them a Glycemic Index (GI) rating. The ratings are based on how much certain foods affect blood sugar, and were first designed as a way to help diabetics cope with insulin and blood sugar levels. However, it was discovered shortly thereafter, that using the GI as a way to promote a healthy diet was also very effective.

One of the current issues with the GI is that many places provide different number ratings for the same foods, which makes it really difficult to accurately measure your diet. However, with a little bit of discretion, you should be able to find an average number or an accurate source that you can use for all of your measurements. Most foods are rated in categories of low, medium, and high. Low is anything under 55, medium is between 55 and 69, and high is anything over 70.

Oddly enough, many GI rating indexes will give lower numbers for foods with sugar, such as candy and chocolate, than they do to sugary fruits, such as bananas and strawberries. Obviously, fruits are healthier than candy, but again you have to use discretion when choosing foods based on Glycemic Index Diets. What I mean is that you have to use common sense. Just because something has a low number doesn't mean that it is healthy, it just means that it will not affect your blood sugar as much.

Really, GI diets are great for helping diabetics and overweight people understand their biochemistry and how they can manipulate their diets to avoid getting too much in the way of sugary foods. Avoiding many of these foods will not only help you lose weight, but will also provide you with consistent energy levels throughout the day. That can be a very important part of any diet, as a diet that robs you of energy is going to be very difficult to maintain over long periods of time. Glycemic index diets have been around long enough for you to be able to do some of your own research and find a source for measuring foods that works consistently for you.

The principles of the glycemic index diet are sound, meaning that avoiding sugary foods and sticking to proteins, good carbohydrates, and vegetables is going to not only improve your health, but also help your energy levels and help you lose weight. A healthy diet is more of a lifestyle change than a short term decision, so learning about foods using the GI is a fantastic way to explore your dietary habits in detail. Remember, no diet is perfect, but if you stick to something like this then more than likely you will be satisfied with the results.

Weight Loss Myths and Facts

Weight Loss - Fact or Fiction

As time goes by, do you suspect that a tailor is sneaking into your closet at night and gradually taking in your clothes? Do you wonder why you're having such a hard time squeezing into your pants? Are you finding that even your favourite shoes are too snug now?

Weight gain tends to creep up, especially as we age. It's a simple fact of human life: as we get older, our metabolism generally gets slower. That means we need fewer calories to maintain a healthy weight than we did, say, 20 years ago. Plus, if our eating habits stay the same as in years past, and we get less exercise, all those calories have nowhere to go but into our fat reserves.

If you've decided to fire the midnight tailor, congratulations. Maintaining a healthy weight is a key part of healthy aging. Be careful, though, not to undermine your efforts with the persistent myths that circulate around food, fat, and exercise. Test your "lean living" smarts against these weight loss facts and myths:

  1. Skipping breakfast helps you lose weight.
Actually, weight control experts have known for years that a good breakfast not only fuels you for the day, but helps curb cravings later on. In fact, according to a study released last year, a big breakfast (carbohydrates, lean protein and even a small piece of dark chocolate) can help lead to major weight loss. The study found that overweight, inactive women lost almost five times as much weight on a big breakfast as women who followed a restrictive, low-carbohydrate diet.
  2. To lose weight, you have to cut out starches.
It's true that too much of anything – including bread, rice, pasta and potatoes – can put on pounds. But these starches (carbohydrates) are fairly low in fat and calories themselves. What you should cut out are the toppings and sauces that add needless fat and calories.
  3. Some foods, like grapefruit, make you lose weight fast.
No food, including grapefruit, or cabbage soup, or celery, can actually cause weight loss.
  4. If a package says "low-fat" or "fat-free," you can eat lots of what's inside without gaining weight.
This is a common "fat" trap. Yes, it's often true that a low-fat or fat-free item has fewer calories than its full-fat equivalent. But be sure to read the Nutrition Facts label on the package: It can sometimes be shocking just how many calories that "fat-free" goodie contains. Many processed foods add sugar or other ingredients to add flavour after fat has been removed.
  5. Eating at night puts on weight.
It doesn't matter when you eat – if you overeat, taking in more calories than your body needs, you'll store those calories as fat.
  6. It's good to lift weights or do other strength-training exercises as part of a weight-loss plan.
Absolutely true. These activities help build muscle, and muscle burns more calories than body fat. Don't worry – you won't "bulk up" from doing strength training two or three days a week.
  7. To lose weight and keep it off, a healthy rate of weight loss is losing ½ to two pounds a week.
This couldn't be more right. If you lose too much weight too fast (more than three pounds a week after the first few weeks), you'll probably gain it all back after you drop that fad diet. What's more, losing weight too fast can put you at risk for developing gallstones. You could even develop a dangerously erratic heart rhythm.
For smart, healthy weight loss, experts suggest a sensible approach: healthy, balanced eating, physical activity, and lots of encouragement and motivation. That's just the formula that has helped so many people control their weight with Leanology from TriVita. Leanology is the science-based key to sustained weight loss. It's a fact: Many weight loss myths are just that...

Weight Loss

Give Leanology a try It Easy And it really works

"I have been taking TriVita products since 2003 and I love them all. At one time, in my early 30s, I was overweight and was able to lose 120 pounds and it was great! Over the past few years I have wanted to lose an extra 25 pounds, but I was stuck in that 'zone' where you just can't seem to lose those last few pounds!

I decided to try Leanology by TriVita; I was really impressed how easy it was. At first, I did not have time to make the shakes, so I took the Leanology Capsules. I began taking three Leanology capsules with my breakfast and three with my lunch. I felt so good! It really helped curb my appetite.

SharonI lost 25 pounds in three months, and I did it safely and in a very healthy manner. Leanology's exclusive Converta™ blend is amazing – it allows your body to convert fat into energy and this truly makes the product work.

Now, I do things a little different than many people. Our bodies love balance and require it! If you keep your body expecting the things it needs, everything seems to work better and you feel great. I tell people, 'Have a system of when you eat your meals and take your products and stick to it. Your body will thank you!' This is true, especially if you want to lose weight. I apply this to my daily meals, as well as my nutritional supplements that I take from TriVita. I eat my meals at the same time each day and take the same supplements with each of those meals. It works so wonderfully, and I feel fantastic all the time. The wonderful thing about Leanology is that it is natural, which makes it safe for so many people who are unable to try other products due to the amount of stimulants.

I tell people...always take the capsules. If you have time to make a shake, it's a great meal replacement and it's satisfying. I have several people that I have referred Leanology to, and they have lost weight and are happy with the system.

So, if you are looking to lose weight – give Leanology a try! It's easy and it works! I am so in love with TriVita and you can tell by how many people I have referred! It is all a blessing!"

Calorie Restrictive Diet

Calorie Restriction For Life Extension: What They Didn't Tell You On Oprah

On a recent episode of the Oprah show, one of the guests was a 51 year old man with the heart of a 20 year old. He's been following a calorie restriction plan and they said he might be one of the first people to reach 120 years old by following this plan. There have been stories both in the lay press and scientific press about calorie restriction for years and it has been a frequent talk show topic on other many other TV shows. However, before you cut your calories in half in hopes of adding another decade onto your life, you'd better get the other half of the story they didn't talk about on Oprah.

I've seen a lot of strange things in the health field, and although calorie restriction (CR) is the subject of serious and legitimate scientific study, I consider CR to be one of those strange things. Of course, that's because I choose a different lifestyle - the muscle-friendly Burn The fat, Feed The Muscle lifestyle - but there's more than one reason why I'm not a CR advocate:

Hunger while dieting is almost always a challenge. There's some hunger even with conservative calorie deficits of 15-20% under maintenance. Prolonged hunger is one of the biggest reasons people fall off the weight loss diet wagon because it's unpleasant and difficult to resist. This is why pharmaceutical and supplement companies spend millions of dollars on researching, developing and marketing appetite suppressants. Yet CR advocates put themselves through 30-50% calorie restriction on a daily basis as a way of life in the hopes of extending life span or health.

Practitioners of CR follow a low-calorie lifestyle, but technically, they are not in a chronic 30% calorie deficit. That would be impossible. What happens is their metabolisms get very slow (that's part of the idea behind CR; if you slow down your metabolism, you allegedly slow down aging). So a 6 foot tall man who would normally require nearly 3,000 calories to maintain his weight, might eventually reach an energy balance at only 1800 or 1900 calories. This is not just due to a 'starvation mode' phenomenon, that's only part of it. It's primarily because he loses weight until he is very thin and his smaller body doesn't need many calories any more.

Does caloric restriction really extend lifespan?

The biological mechanisms of lifespan extension through calorie restriction are not fully understood, but researchers say it may involve alterations in energy metabolism (as mentioned above), reduced oxidative damage, improvements in insulin sensitivity, reduction of glycation, modulation of protein metabolism, down regulation of pro-inflammatory genes and functional changes in both neuroendocrine and autonomic nervous systems.

Mouse studies on CR go back as far as 1935 and monkey studies began in the late 1980's. So far the results are clear on one thing: caloric restriction does increase lifespan in rodents and other lower species (yeast, worms and flies). Studies suggest the life of the laboratory rat is 25% longer with CR (even longer with aggressive CR). Primate studies are still underway and humans have been experimenting with CR for some time. In primates and humans, biomarkers of aging show signs of slower aging with CR. This makes many proponents talk about this CR as if it were a sure-thing, already proven through double-blind randomised clinical human trials.

The truth is, there is NO direct experimental evidence that you will live longer from practicing CR. Due to the length of human lifespan, we will not have the necessary data for at least another generation and perhaps multiple generations. Even then, it will still be highly speculative whether CR will extend human life at all and if so how much. We can only estimate. I've seen guesses in the scientific literature ranging from 3 to 13 years, if CR is practiced for an entire adult lifetime.

Jay Phelan, a biologist at UCLA is skeptical. He says the potential life extension is on the lower end of that range and the increase is so small that it's not worth the semi-starvation:

"There is no current evidence that lifelong caloric restriction leads to increased lifespan in primates. It's certainly tantalizing that things like blood pressure or heart rate look as though they are a lot healthier and I believe they are. Whether or not this translates to a significantly increased lifespan, I don't know. I predict that it doesn't."

I don't quibble qualitatively with their results. Yes, it will increase lifespan, but it will not increase it by 50% or 60%, it won't increase it by 20% or 10%, it might increase it by 2%. So if you tell me that I have to do something horrible for every day of my life for a 2% benefit - for an extra year of life - I say no thanks."

Is prolonged caloric restriction unhealthy?

When caloric restriction is practiced with optimal nutrition (CRON), it is not inherently unhealthy. Actually, it appears the reverse is true. First, the weight loss that comes with the low calories produces improvements in the health markers, as you would expect. Second, the meticulous choice of food from CRON practitioners, where they pick high nutrient foods and avoid empty calories means that they are making healthy food choices. Third, advocates say that the CR itself improves health. I wonder, however, how much does CR improve health independent of the weight loss and the optimal nutrition?

By losing fat and maintaining an ideal body composition (the fat to muscle ratio) and eating high nutrient density foods, I propose that even at a more normal caloric intake, you will get very significant health and longevity benefits. I also propose that gaining muscle in a natural way (no steroids) will increase your quality of life today and as you get older.

Aside from the fact that we are not lab rats, the truth is, none of us knows when our day will come. We could get plucked off this physical plane at any moment and have no control over how it happens. My belief is that we should make our lifestyle decisions based on quality of life, not just quantity of life. That includes our quality of life today as well as our anticipated quality of life when we are older. Maybe we ought to be focusing more on "health span" than life span.

Downsides of calorie restriction for life extension

One fact about calorie restriction that they often don't mention on these talk shows is that the benefits of CR decline if you start CR at a later age. This was discussed in a research paper from the Journal of Nutrition called, "Starving for life: what animal studies can and cannot tell us about the use of caloric restriction to prolong human lifespan." The author of the paper, John Speakman from the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, said that the later in life you begin to practice CR, the less of an increase in lifespan you will achieve. Even if the CR proponents are right, if you started in your late 40's or mid 50's for example, the benefit would be minimal. If you started in your 60's the effect would be almost nonexistent. Essentially, you have to "starve for life" to get the benefits.

While some CR proponents claim that they aren't hungry and they cite studies suggesting that hunger decreases during starvation, Speakman and other researchers say that hunger remains a big problem during CR - especially in today's modern society where we are surrounded with convenience food and numerous eating cues - and that alone makes CR impractical:

"Neuroendocrine profiles support the idea that animals under CR are continuously hungry. The feasibility of restricting intake in humans for many decades is questionable."

Let's suppose for a moment that CR is totally legit and the claims are true. Many of the proposed benefits of CR come at the expense of what many of us are trying to do here: gain and maintain lean body mass. One spokesman for CR is 6 feet tall and 130 pounds. Another poster boy for CR is 6 foot tall and 115 lbs. Measurements of rodents under CR not only show large reductions in skeletal muscle but also bone mass.

I am not suggesting that these CR practitioners are anorexic, a concern that has been raised about CR when practiced aggressively. However, they are losing large amounts of fat-free tissue and that is plainly obvious for all to see when you look at their bony physiques. I am not imposing my body standards on others, but 115 to 130 lbs at 6 foot tall is underweight for a man by any standard. Furthermore, researchers say that at the body mass indices sustained by most voluntary CR practitioners, we would expect females to become amenorrheic. "One thing that is completely incompatible with a CR lifestyle is reproduction" says Speakman.

With that kind of atrophy, I have to wonder what their quality of life will be like in old age. While many people struggle with body fat for most of their adult lives, I'm sure almost everyone knows an elderly person who wrestles with the opposite problem: they are seriously underweight and they struggle to eat enough and maintain lean body mass.

My grandmother, before she passed away, was under 80 lbs. We could not get her to eat. She was weak and very frail. I have reported many times about the research showing how most overweight people under estimate calorie intake and eat more than they think or admit. In elder care homes, the research has often showed the opposite - the patients over estimate how much they eat. They swear they are eating enough, but they aren't and they keep losing dangerous amounts of weight. With underweight, atrophied seniors, weakness means less functionality and lower quality of life and a fall can mean more than broken bones, it can be life-threatening.

Life extension with more muscle

While there is a commonality between CRON and the way I recommend eating (high nutrient density, low calorie density foods), in most regards, CR is the opposite of my approach. In my Burn The Fat, Feed The Muscle program, we go for a higher energy flux nutrition program, which means that because we are weight training and doing cardio and leading a very active lifestyle, we get to eat more. Because we are so active and well-trained, the eating more does not have a negative effect as it would on a sedentary person, who might get sick and fat from the additional calories. We active folks take those calories, burn them for energy, partition them into lean muscle tissue and we enjoy a faster metabolism and extremely high quality of life.

As a bodybuilder, CR is not compatible with my priorities, but hypothetically speaking, if I were to practice a lower calorie lifestyle, I wouldn't follow an aggressive CR approach. I'd probably do as the Okinawans do. They have a very simple philosophy: hari hachi bu: eat until you are only 80% full. While this does not mean there is a carefully measured 20% calorie deficit, it's consistent with what we practice in the Burn The Fat, Feed The Muscle lifestyle for a fat loss phase, and avoiding overeating is certainly a smart way to avoid obesity and health problems. Incidentally, the Okinawans eat about 40% less than Americans, and 11% less than they should, according to standard caloric intake guidelines, and they live 4 years longer than Americans.

If someone is being "sold" on CR by an enthusiastic CR spokesperson, or simply curious after watching the latest TV talk show (where they are looking for controversial stories), it's important to know that there is more than one side to the story. If you carefully read the entire body of research on CR, you will see that the experts are split right down the middle in their opinions about whether CR will really work. CR for humans remains highly controversial and there are no guarantees that this will extend your life.

Researchers at the National Institutes of Health in Baltimore, MD put it this way:
"Because it is unlikely that an experimental study will ever be designed to address this question in humans, we respond that "we think we will never know for sure." We suggest that debate of this question is clearly an academic exercise."

In closing, let me go back to one of the original questions I was asked: "Can the BFFM food plan also be thought as a longevity lifestyle, but with more muscle mass?" Absolutely beautifully said! That's precisely what Burn The Fat, Feed The Muscle is.

I believe that by making healthy food choices but doing so at a higher level of calorie intake and expenditure, that we can fend off sarcopenia - the age related decline in muscle mass that debilitates many seniors - while enjoying a more muscular physique, greater strength, and a less restrictive lifestyle. Most gerontologists agree - by making simple lifestyle changes that include strength training and good nutrition, you can easily turn back the biological clock 10 years without going hungry.

Weight Loss

Desperate to lose Weight

The first thing to remember when you are desperate to lose weight is that it is not safe to lose too much weight too quickly. In fact weight loss should happen gradually. Losing weight can be a challenge, but if you are consistent and can incorporate these easy tips in your daily lifestyle, it may not be as difficult as what it seems.

Selecting the right foods:

Foods that are rich in their fat content should definitely be avoided. A person wanting to lose weight should not consume more than 25% of their calories intake from non – saturated fat. Many research and studies have shown that table sugar increases calories consumption. It is a fact that eating sweet would make you want to eat more of everything and also make your body emit chromium which is a mineral that helps in production of calorie burning lean tissue. Increasing the intake of dietary fibre can also help in weight loss as foods rich in fibre help in curbing hunger and improving the digestive system. Rich fibre foods include fruits, whole grain cereals and vegetables. In fact it is advisable to consume fresh and raw vegetables and fruits instead of junk food and other snacks. This would also result in a stronger immune system and great skin. Rich protein diets are a great fat burning mechanism which helps in initiating weight loss and building muscles. Finally avoid salty food when trying to lose weight as salt forces the body to retain water which results in bloating.

Hydration:

It is very important to drink a substantial number of glasses of water to keep the nutrients in balance. Water acts like a solvent for many necessary minerals and vitamins and also helps in flushing out waste and toxins from the body. As a rule, one should lose half an ounce of water for every pound of the body weight daily. Drinking unflavoured and plain filtered water will also keep the body hydrated. Adding green tea to the routine would also help in natural weight loss. Drinking green tea on a daily basis would speed up the metabolism of the body which would result in burning fat at a much higher rate. Finally drinking milk also plays an important role in weight loss as it lowers the overall calories count in the body.

Daily Routine Exercise:

One of the most important tips if you are desperate to lose weight, includes exercising. Regular working out would complement the diet and improve the overall shape and contour of the body. It would also help in blood flow which is essential for the proper functioning of the tissues. It is not necessary for the workout to be very extensive. In fact simple exercise like isometric exercises or walking to suit the person's fitness level can be undertaken. It is very important to burn fats by choosing a programme that is simple and easy to follow for you. If you plan to follow a long workout programme, it is advisable to take small breaks in between. This would help in burning fats faster than usual.

The Importance Of Vegetables

Desperate to lose Weight

Are you eating enough Vegetables?

Everyone knows they're healthy, but most don't realize just how extremely effective they are for fat loss. Here's why...

  1. They are very low in calories and so perfect for creating that necessary caloric deficit. You'd have to eat 20 large bags of spinach, or 5 heads of broccoli, to equal the calories of just 1 cup of pasta or 1 tablespoon of butter.
So, you absolutely do not have to go hungry on tiny portions when you load up on veggies. In fact, it's almost impossible to eat too many. Load 'em up!
Take grilled vegetables and shrimp, for example. This is a perfect combination of fibrous carbs with protein, which is exactly what you want later in the day. A large portion that fills up your entire plate has only around 250 calories.
Compare it to a plate of processed carbs and high-fat foods. You only get to enjoy 1 REALLY small, thin slice of pizza for 250 calories and almost no nutritional value, and none of the energy or protein you need.
But when you focus on veggies you can eat a LOT more food, with less calories and a lot more nutritional value.
  2. Veggies are also high in fiber. This is both good for your digestion and fat loss because fiber expands in your stomach, making you feel full and satisfied.
A bowl of spinach has 8 grams of fiber, about 1/3 of your daily requirement. Broccoli, green peas, and other green leafy vegetables are also good sources of fiber.
  3. The third reason fibrous carbs are perfect for fat loss is because they have almost NO adverse affects on blood sugar levels. While it's still a good idea to balance veggies out with a protein source, even eaten alone they're okay because they don't cause an increase in insulin.
  4. And finally, they're loaded with vitamins and minerals and other very beneficial nutrients, such as antioxidants and phytonutrients, that will help you look and feel better, fight off disease, and improve your overall health.
If there's any one type of food that is the most helpful for fat loss, it's definitely vegetables. So, if you need any really yummy veggie recipes,

Weight Loss

"I'm healthier, and feel younger and very positive about my long-term health."  says Judd

"I started Leanology, because for the last four years, getting back to 190 pounds has been my long-term goal. I had a big event coming up in three months so I used that as motivation. I was positive that the product would work. My wife was my biggest supporter. As of today, I've lost 39 pounds and I'm now at 191 pounds and would like to drop another 5 to 10 pounds.

The shakes are filling and taste fantastic so that helps me stay the course and not gain. They are a great meal substitute. I often have these delicious shakes at work when I'm too busy for lunch. They're so easy to prepare! In addition to taking the nutritious shakes and weight loss capsules, I practice the 10 Essentials regularly and find them vital to the success of reaching my goal.

Since losing the weight, my life has changed in every way: I have more confidence; I'm healthier, feel younger and very positive about my long-term health. When I'd hit a plateau, I would attack it in steps. First, I changed what I ate. Second, I made sure I was eating healthy snacks. Third, I would drink the shake for dinner rather than for breakfast or lunch. The last thing I did was change the types of foods and snacks I was eating.

I got most frustrated with my weight loss journey whenever I didn't lose weight. The easiest part about Leanology was accepting the shake as a meal substitute. If I could give others any advice just starting their weight loss journey, I would tell them to set goals, learn to enjoy healthy snacks, and most importantly, if you mess up, stop and start over, but don't quit."

Weigth Loss Diets

Desperate to lose Weight

Should low-carb, high fat diets be considered "fad diets"? A Comment by Mann and Nye published in the Lancet simply assumes that these diets don't have any scientific credibility, but we've seen a number of important studies in major publications, including recent trials in the NEJM by Shai et al and in JAMA, by Gardner et al, to suggest that these diets are very far from being dismissed as mere fads. In fact, there's plenty of evidence to suggest that they should be taken very seriously indeed. (In fact, as any expert will reluctantly concede, there's almost no good randomised, controlled data to conclusively demonstrate that any diet is better than any other.)

It's important that real fads be exposed for what they truly are, but it's equally important that genuine alternative hypotheses don't get branded as marginal simply because they don't conform to conventional wisdom.

Decide for yourself. Read the Lancet comment here or the press release below.

Here is the Lancet press release:

FAD DIETS IN SWEDEN, OF ALL PLACES

Nutrition experts have expressed their surprise over the involvement of Sweden in a controversy regarding promotion of low carbohydrate high fat (LCHF) diets in the country. The issues are discussed in a Comment published in this week's edition of The Lancet, written by Dr Jim Mann and Dr Edwin R Nye, University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand.

Many 'fad' diets have been publicised in recent years, including the ultra-low carbohydrate Atkins diet. Other comparable LCHF diets have also been credited with significant weight loss without obvious adverse effects. The authors say: "Most authorities have argued against prescription of LCHF diets and such messages have not been incorporated into dietary guidelines for populations and people with diabetes. However, recent experiences in Sweden show the potential of committed adherents, supported by a potentially misguided mass media, to influence officialdom to an extent that might adversely influence national public health and the health of individuals."

The controversy began in 2007 when two dietitians suggested to Sweden's National Board of Health and Welfare that LCHF dietary advice recommended to diabetic patients by general practitioner Dr Annika Dahlqvist was not compatible with either scientific evidence or accepted practice. However, Dahlqvist was exonerated after a report by diabetologist Dr Christian Berne, who said there was some scientific basis for offering LCHF diets, with a number of caveats—including the absence of long-term studies and the need for patient monitoring (including measurement of lipids). Dahlqvist's exoneration resulted in headlines suggesting an about-turn by the Board, and Dahlqvist herself suggested that her diet was appropriate not only for people with diabetes but also for the whole population for better health and weight control.

Another facet to the story then emerged. An expert group, part of the Board, had been due to publish a report on nutritional recommendations for people with diabetes. But two of the experts on the panel were removed by the newly appointed Director-General—who considered their links to the food industry via the Swedish Nutrition Foundation might represent a conflict of interest. The Foundation receives food industry funding—but via expert scientists provides independent advice to industry. The two scientists involved—Bengt Vessby and Nils-Georg Asp, are internationally respected, and their dismissal caused outrage in the rest of the Board and the scientific community. The expert group began work in September 2008, but in the meantime the authors say that 'misguided enthusiasm and reporting appear to have triumphed over expert opinion'. Aftonbladet, the country's largest newspaper, has published details of high fat/low carbohydrate principle.

An anonymous letter, quoting Dahlqvist's blogs, has been sent to all schools, preschools, and daycare centres in the country, advocating this dietary approach to 'save our children's brains'. The authors say: "Despite the National Food Administration of Sweden having published a list of 72 articles which suggest that high fat diets are detrimental compared with eight articles suggesting that they are not, enthusiasm for high-fat diets persists. One of Dahlqvist's popular books on the subject of high-fat diets has been number one on the non-fiction bestseller list in Sweden."

The authors believe it likely the Swedish public will interpret the sequence of events as another example of experts failing to agree, and that they will conclude there is no case for making dietary changes associated with clinical and public health benefit (i.e., to lower-fat diets). They say: "It is also ironic that this debate should have occurred in a country which helped to pioneer cardiac rehabilitation and preventive cardiology, and one of the few to report a decline in the rates of childhood obesity."

They conclude: "There are some lessons here for international agencies, professional organisations, and governmental and regulatory bodies. Perhaps one of the most important is the need for internationally accepted criteria for evidence-based nutrition guidelines as there are for evidence-based medicine."

Weight Loss

Desperate to lose Weight

What if someone told you they were going on a lima bean diet? Or suggested that you could lose 20 pounds in a day? Sound absurd? True, these diets don't exist, but they are no more ridiculous than some of the fad diets that have come and gone. Not only are fad diets ineffective, but they can also be dangerous. Losing weight the healthy way is the best way to take it off – and keep it off.

Recognizing a fad diet
The tried-and-true way to lose weight is to burn more calories than you consume. You can do this in a healthy way, but it will take time and effort. Diets that sound too good to be true... are. Watch for these fad diet red flags:

A quick fix: Promises of quick weight loss – and large amounts of it – are sure signs of a fad diet. You might lose weight at the beginning, but it likely won't last – and losing weight too quickly may increase your risk of gallstones. Experts suggest losing no more than ½ to 2 pounds per week for safe and lasting weight loss.

Severe calorie restriction: While you must burn more calories than you eat to lose weight, extreme calorie restriction can be dangerous, and is another hallmark of fad diets. You can reduce your caloric intake, but you should only reduce it to a healthy level. Less than 800 calories per day can result in heart rhythm abnormalities. One pound of fat contains 3,500 calories; by reducing your weekly intake by 3,500 calories, you can lose one pound per week. You can also burn part of the 3,500 calories through exercise.

Removal of a food group or eating only one type of food: Although removing sugar and processed foods from your diet is a great idea, removing an entire food group, or only eating one type of food is a bad idea – one that is commonly advocated by fad diets. Without a balanced diet, you will not get the nutrients you need for optimal health. Plus, it's easier to stick with a diet plan that includes a variety of foods to choose from.

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases recommends a healthy eating plan that:

  • Emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains and fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products
  • Includes lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs and nuts
  • Is low in saturated fats, trans fat, cholesterol, salt (sodium) and added sugars

Slow and steady works in weight loss You may have heard the expression that slow and steady wins the race. That certainly applies to weight loss. Remember, losing ½ to 2 pounds per week is the healthiest and most effective way to take weight off and keep it off.

TriVita's Leanology® Smart Weight Loss System can help! Fat-burning capsules, delicious shakes for low-calorie meal substitution, and tasty chews for snack replacement and appetite control are all designed for slow, steady – and effective – weight loss. • Exercise at least 30 minutes most days of the week (An essential part of your weight loss program! See Breaking Down Exercise Barriers)
  • Eat moderate portions – use smaller plates and bowls and don't go back for seconds
  • Keep a regular eating schedule and don't skip meals
  • Include a variety of foods in your diet
  • Don't buy junk food; stick to the outer perimeter of the store, where you'll find the healthiest food
  • Avoid soda and baked goods
  • Eat whole foods; avoid processed
  • Grill, steam and bake rather than fry foods
  • Eat slowly; put your fork down between bites
